Since 1970 the X-ray diffraction studies of the phase equilibria in systems of two transition metals (including rare earths elements) with gallium, as well as determination of the crystal structure and properties of new synthesized for the first time compounds of these systems were the main area of research provided by V.Ya. Markiv, N.M. Bilyavina, I.P. Shevchenko, M.V. Speka. The most significant results of these works are: study of components interaction in these systems; building of the phase diagrams (more than 130 isothermal sections of new ternary systems); determination of the crystal structures of more than 500 intermetallic compounds, including about 60 compounds crystallizing in new (own) structure types. The most important results of these studies are published in «Pearson’s Handbook Crystallographic Data for Intermetallic Phases» //P Villars; L D Calvert; W B; Edition, PearsonMetals Park, Oh : American Society for Metals, 1985, in the «The Powder Diffraction File and Related Products», in the «ICSD-Inorganic Crystal Structure Database», in the «Landolt-Bornstein DataBase» and in the «ASM Alloy Phase Diagram» base.
Recently, M.P. Semen'ko, N.M. Bilyavyna, O.I. Nakonechna, A.V. Kuryliuk have provided a comprehensive X-ray diffraction study of the novel nanopowder materials synthesized by mechanical alloying of various powder mixtures in a high-energy planetary ball mill. The valuable results include: successful synthesis of d-transition metal carbides from appropriate mixtures of pure metals and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) powders; the synthesis of a novel cubic carbide NiC; the synthesis of a series of multicomponent high-entropy alloys of (HEAs). Results of these studies are summarized in two monographs (Î.². Íàêîíå÷íà, À.Ì. Êóðèëþê, Í.Ì. To improve the quality and reliability of the results obtained X-ray diffraction methods for polycrystalline materials study are constantly modified. Development of application software packages and information DataBases providing solutions of various materials science problems make a base of this work. Main achievements were embodied in the creation in 1990 of a highly efficient Automated System for Collecting, Processing and Interpreting X-ray Diffraction Spectra of Polycrystalline Substances, which contains the full complex of standard Rietveld procedures and described in the work : M. Dashevskyi, Î. Boshko, O. Nakonechna, N. Belyavina, Phase transformations at mechanical milling of the equiatomic Y-Cu powder mixture // Metallofiz. Noveishie Tekhnol. 2017, 39 N 4 p. 541-552. DOI: 10.15407/mfint.39.04.0541 . It should be noted that the use of the full complex of X-ray diffraction methods described below (more details) allowed us to effectively study the kinetics of the charge components interaction at its mechanical alloying in a ball mill. At that, the test samples are selected after 30 min, 1 h, etc. of processing time and studied by XRD. The diffraction patterns obtained are examined by all the methods described, namely, qualitative and quantitative phase analysis; refinement of the crystal structures of the phase components; calculation of the parameters of the real structure (tensile strain and deformation rate, sizes of coherent scattering blocks). In the case of the synthesis of a new compound, an automatic search for analogous structures in existing DataBases is involved (more details). We believe that structural studies, which involve refining initial crystal structures of phase components and constructing new structural models when necessary, are fundamentally innovative. These studies provide reliable information about atomic migration, such as the formation of structural vacancies and the embedding of atoms into interstitial spaces at mechanochemical synthesis. Detailed results on the study the kinetics of mechanochemical synthesis of the mixtures of carbon with metal powders are presented in the works: 1.
