X-Ray Diffraction Methods at the Department of Metal Physics of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv |
|
The Department of Physics of Metals was founded by Prof. S.D. Gertsriken at Kyiv University in 1932 on the basis of the X-ray metal physics laboratory. Since then, X-ray methods have traditionally been one of the important aspects of both the educational process and scientific research of the chair and physics department.
Currently, within the framework of the specialized blocks of Physics of Metals and Physics of Nanosystems for students of the Department of Metal Physics, the Professors teach special courses in which they highlight the application of X-ray diffractometric methods in the study of composite materials, coatings, nanomaterials, etc.
Since 1970, at the initiative of the head of the Department of Physics of Metals, Prof. Kuz’menko P.P., under the leadership of Docent, Ph.d, Markiv V.Ya., the works were initiated to study phase equilibria in ternary systems of two transition metals (including rare earths) with gallium, as well as the works to determine the crystal structure of new, first-synthesized compounds of these systems. To carry out this work, Markiv V.Ya. and Bilyavina N.M created the necessary technological and instrumental base, and also, through the development of application software packages, they improved methods for X-ray research of polycrystalline materials for solving various problems of Physical Materials Science.
Since 2010, the objects of comprehensive X-ray studies have been the products of mechanical alloying obtained by processing various powder mixtures, containing carbon, metals, carbides, nitrides, etc. in a high-energy planetary mill (Prof. Zakharenko M.I., Prof. Semen'ko M.P., Eng. Dashevsky M.M.).
Over the years, work in the area of X-ray diffraction study of materials has been carried out by various scientists of the Department of Metal Physics: V.Ya. Markiv, N.M. Biliavyna, I.S. Gavrylenko, M.V. Speka, V.G. Kudin, M.P. Semen’ko, M.I. Zakharenko, O.I. Nakonechna, I.P. Shevchenko, O.I. Skrypka. Leading engineer L.V. Oliynyk has been maintaining the equipment in a proper condition .

This website briefly describes the X-ray methods we used for the study of phase composition of materials synthesised, crystal and real structure of phase components. All of the above methods include an original software packages equipped with the crystallographic characteristics DataBase of intermetallic (inorganic) compounds and their diffraction patterns (references)
The information we have provided may be useful for students and postgraduates of specialized in Materials Science and Physics of Metals as well as for those who working in the area of new materials synthesis (chemical compounds, composites, coatings, etc.)
